Dude....

Sorry. Still haven't been writing as much as I had originally hoped. I got sick two days ago and then I didn't feel great the next day either. But I'm back on my feet and feeling great!

And I have today and tomorrow off of work. Woo too!

Today is all about cleaning and organizing. I love doing this and so does my dad, but nobody else in our house has come to help us. It's 11 am and everyone is still hiding out in their rooms.

But as I'm trying to clean up my life physically, I'm thinking of what to do for my New Year's Resolution(s). I want to clean up my diet for one. I eat a bunch of fruit, but not a lot of vegetables. I also eat a bunch of carbs, so I want to cut back on that and fill my diet with better foods. I definitely don't eat badly, don't get me wrong. But focusing on eating healthier, better for me foods will be good.

I also want to start taking more pictures for my blog! And not care as much about Facebook. I honestly love reading/writing blogs and using Twitter more, so why waste all of my time on Facebook. I will still use it obviously. It's a great social media tool! But I don't want to be obsessed with it anymore.

I really just need to be more specific with my resolutions and make a list, which I fully intend to do today or tomorrow. I'll let y'all know. And since I have these two days off, I will make sure to blog again! Hope everyone is enjoying the last few days of 2011!

Black Monday?

Today I had work starting at 8 a.m. And just so you know, I work at a Hallmark in a strip mall. Normally Hallmarks don't open until at least 10, and maybe later in strip malls. But today we opened at 8.

All of the Christmas stuff went on 40% sale, including Hallmark's ornaments, which are like crack to some people. People seriously fight over these things! So the fact that they are on sale is crazy.

I worked an 8 hour shift. Crazy day. Long day. But I was still surprisingly positive at the end of my shift. Doesn't mean I could last any longer, but I made it! Working retail can be tiring.

My Gift to Y'all

Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect.

Break Time

I had the past two days off of work, which was really nice. I got a lot done!

Yesterday, I started my day early. I woke up, took the dogs for a walk and then did my own 45 minute run. The cold weather made it hard to breathe at first, but I felt good and went at a great pace. I really want to get back into running like I used to.

Then, I went shopping with my Mom. Employee Appreciation day at Hallmark, so I got 50% off of everything I needed! I finished my Christmas shopping, so I'm happy about that. I also went to Bookmans and got 3 books to read during my free time. I love reading, so I do it a lot when I don't have a lot of reading for class. And my books were free since I traded in store credit! My family trades in a lot of books, so we get a lot for free in return :)

Then I picked up my dad from the airport, but it took 30 minutes for his luggage to come! Needless to say, we weren't happy about having to wait that long. We got home and had a nice family dinner. Then I spent time with some friends, but it wasn't the greatest.

Don't you hate when people keep asking you about stuff that you don't want to talk about? Even when you try to change the subject? Well that's what last night was.

Today I got my hair cut! It's all gone- well not all. But it's a lot shorter and I have bangs and I love it! I also got an eye exam. I always have to make appointments and get stuff like this done when I'm home.

Also, I did all of my holiday baking this morning and gave away the cookies. I made the coolest snicker doodles in a spiral shape- awesome!

Tomorrow is finally Christmas Eve! And I have to work an 8 hour shift at work, which I'm sure will be loads of fun :p At least I'm making money though!

Sorry about the long update, but I don't get on my computer as often when I'm at home. Well sometimes I don't get on at all. But I really am trying to be better!

31-24

31-24. Good job Frogs!

There weren't that many people there and it wasn't a great game, but we pulled it out in the end! Out of the 2 years that I've been at TCU, we've won both bowl games- Rose Bowl last year and Poinsettia Bowl this year.

So proud of my school!

Please?

Dear TCU Horned Frogs,

This letter is to encourage you and complain.

First with my complaint. YOU ARE BETTER THAN THIS. Please play like I know you can. It seems like you came into this game thinking you were better than LA Tech, which is true. But don't think that! Then you become cocky and can't play when they start winning.

Now for the encouraging part. Get your butts into gear! You can play better than this and you know it! Now do it!

Love,
Mariah

:(

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

17-10

17-10. TCU. Let's keep it up frogs!

YEAH!

TIE GAME! Let's go frogs!

End of 1st

Home sweet home!

Today was a great day! I love being able to wake up in my own bed at whatever time I want.

I was able to wake up and work out for like 3 hours- through cardio kickboxing, walking/running with the dogs, and starting my own running schedule. I found an awesome training schedule in this running book I have, so I'm going to try it. Today was easy, with just a 30 minute run. Tomorrow will be hard though- 800's. I was always bad at 800's, even when I was in my prime... we'll see how it goes.

Then I had breakfast with some friends and we picked secret Santas. I love doing secret Santa because then everyone gets a good priced gift, instead of everyone getting something small that they won't use. And it was awesome to catch up with friends that I don't get to see all year!

My sister and I had some bonding time by window shopping. Until we got to Petsmart, who was having adoption day! We almost got a dog that was a mix of my two dogs right now- Poodle and Bichon.

Finally, got pedicures with my mom and sister. Went grocery shopping. Just a bunch of random, fun stuff.

And just got back from a hayride! Every year, my neighborhood puts on a hayride and there are games and movies too. It's a great little event. The choir kids from the local high school also go on the hayrides and carol. So cute, I wish I had taken pictures. I definitely need a camera!

Good day and so far I'm keeping up with blogging. I'll try to continue this good trend! :)

Bye Fort Worth!

I finally finished all of my finals! Let's just say that I told someone I was "bread dain" after my final this morning... I meant to say brain dead. Not pretty.

But the important part is that I'm done and hopefully, I'll know my grade tomorrow!

And the Super Shuttle is picking me up in 10 minutes. So excited! But it's funny because I've been looking forward to this since Thanksgiving and now I'm a little sad. Being away from TCU for at least 3 weeks? I'll miss my friends!

It'll be awesome to be home though! And I promise to blog over break- I bought a new laptop and I'll finally get to use it when I get home. So I will make sure to post updates! Maybe not as frequently as I do now, but still something.

Now I'm off! Have a good break y'all! And safe flights/drives!

What a Day

If you log onto CNN today, you will immediately see tons of things about the war in Iraq. And how the military is leaving today.

But I personally like this article about how the war changed the lives of these 8 people. And as a warning, they aren't all bad things, but some of them are. Marc Loiselle's story about feeling like a bad person really hit me. Eric Sofge's story was also extremely sad.

Those of us here in America who aren't directly impacted or involved in the war don't understand what goes on and how much this can tear apart families. Yes, we are thankful, but are we 100% sure of what we are thankful for? The people in the military tore apart their lives and sometimes their families to do their job of protecting us.

At the same time, the other side of the argument comes out. Why are we so thankful? As Jim Lewandowski said, he didn't know why he was there sometimes. The war seemed as if it was over already in Iraq and the Iraqis didn't want help from the military. And Spencer Alexander says that more bad than good came out of it all. Why did we put all of these brave people through it?

Wasn't there another way? Why is war the first option? Why couldn't we have left sooner? So many questions and they may be left unanswered. Unfortunately, that is just how it works out sometimes.

But let's just be thankful that it's over now and the military can come home.

#freetotweet

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Recognize this? You should! It's the most important amendment (sorry if you think another one is more important). But seriously, this amendment protects each and every one of us so that we can write, protest, say, and sometimes do whatever we want.

If you need a catchy refresher of the amendment, check out this YouTube video.

As a Journalism and Political Science double major, this amendment is EXTREMELY important to me. How else would I be able to write about what I want? Especially if I'm writing about politics. Without this amendment, people could try to prohibit me from writing and informing the world about important things.

It's ironic because this amendment allows journalists to be watchdogs of the government. We can write about every single thing that government officials are doing because they can't stop us from writing it. So due to an amendment that the government passed, journalists can check the government.

And although I love the fact that this amendment lets me do my dream job, there are many other great things! Like the fact that the government can't control what religion anyone is. It's wonderful that people can come to America and not worry about the government trying to take away their religious beliefs. And it's great for everyone already here too.

Don't like what the government is doing? Want to protest (peacefully!) or inform them about your complaints? Go right ahead! They practically want you to! Why else would they have an amendment allowing you to do that?

If I haven't already convinced you about how amazing/cool/fantastic/great/any other good adjective this amendment is, then... well I don't know. You must hate freedom. Try watching the video again. But I bet I have convinced you or I bet you already knew.

Just keep in mind how fortunate we are to live in a country that provides us this freedom. And y'all be thankful for it every day!

4 down, 1 to go!

This is so true and it doesn't even have to be for running! For example, I woke up this morning to study for my 8 am final. I probably didn't need that extra study time because the final was really easy, but it calmed my nerves.

And I have never woken up for a run and regretted it. I may have hated the run or had a bad run, but I never felt bad about getting out there when I wanted to stay in bed.

Just let that be your motivation for today. You'll never feel bad because you did something, but you'll probably always feel bad when you give up and don't do something.

I realize that last statement is a little weird sounding. But considering I just had 3 finals in an 18 hour period, my brain is quite working as well as it could be right now. Please forgive me.

Keep going!

RW Holiday Streak

So I'm not very good at making sure that I run when my schedule is all messed up like this! Finals week makes my schedule crazy!

On Sunday, I totally planned to run after choir and church. I had study groups all day, so I couldn't run before. I wasn't too happy that I would have to run at the Rec, since it would be dark outside, but I figured it was only one day.

But when I went to the Rec on Sunday, I found out that it had closed at 6! 6?! We are on a college campus? And I went at 7, which isn't late at all!

The Rec is closing by 9 every day this week! It makes me sad because I know they want us to sleep before finals, but why is our cafeteria open later and our Rec closes earlier? I think encouraging people to exercise instead of eat to relieve stress would be a better option.

Anyways, I missed a day of the Runner's World Holiday Streak. But it's okay, because I ran yesterday and today! I haven't been running very much, mainly because I don't have time and my headphones are broken so I can't use my iPod.

When I'm outside, I like to run without my iPod sometimes, but I can't go to the Rec without an iPod. It's so boring!

To do list: Buy headphones. Shorten my presentation for Spanish because it's too long. Start packing and figure out how to fit all my clothes in a carry on. Don't go insane.

More study music!

She has an amazing voice! Listen while you're studying, but take a study break once in a while to sing along, like I'm doing :)

Ugh....

Done with my first final! But now I don't want to take anymore.

Maybe I should read my blog post from earlier to provide some inspiration.

Or take a break. Zumba sounds good to me!

Day 1

It's day 1 of finals week! Let's go!

Here are a few things to hopefully keep everyone motivated this week, make you laugh, and help you relax a bit!

Read this College Love Letter- it's very empathetic to what everyone is going through!

As each day comes to us refreshed and anew, so does my

gratitude renew itself daily. The breaking of the sun over the

horizon is my grateful heart dawning upon a blessed world.

~Terri Guillemets

Feeling like you need more coffee? You might want to rethink that idea. According to this site, drinking too much coffee makes you crash later. So don't drink coffee at like 3 am because you'll be tired again for your 8 am final! Maybe try these energy bars instead.

Need a laugh? Here is Urban Dictionary's definition of finals week.

And these are funny finals mistakes and jokes. Just take comfort in the fact that none of this will happen to you!

Good luck everyone!

A little bit of everything

There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure. -Colin Powell

Finals week is finally here. I'm happy in a way because I just want finals to be over with. But I'm also worried because I haven't been using my time as effectively as I could have. 4 days in a row without class to study? That's extremely generous of the school, but I can't study for 4 days straight! With no class to interrupt. With shortened Rec hours so I can't work out early in the morning or late at night. With saying "Oh, I can go out tonight because I'll study tomorrow."

None of those things combine to create a productive Mariah. I feel like I have studied a lot! But I know I haven't been studying as much as other people, so that makes me feel lazy.

I didn't study at all on Wednesday after class because I had a girl's day/night with my friends. I didn't study Thursday night because we had APO semi-formal. I didn't study all of Friday night because I watched a movie with people in my hall. And last night I went to the basketball game and sorta studied/watched Hulu in my room after. Today I had study groups with people from my classes, which helped. But then I had choir and church and have not been productive since.

I'm ready for 3 out of my 5 finals. One I need to prepare more for is a presentation so that should be easy. And the last one is on Friday, so I have a little time. I think I just need to believe in myself and believe that I am smart enough to do well in my classes! I've prepared, worked hard all semester, and have learned from my mistakes on past tests/presentations. I'm doing exactly what Colin Powell says.

Wish me luck! I'll try to do at least one post every day this week. But don't hate me if I miss one- I am in college and it is finals week!

Comics!

I read the comics every day... not all of them, but I make sure to read The Family Circus, Zits, and Baby Blues. I love those three! Here are two of them from today:

Dead Days

This week, we've had dead days yesterday and today. That just means that we don't have class so that we can study for finals. Yes, there is a fair share of people who don't study, but I'm trying to study as much as I can!

Yesterday, I studied during the day and then we had APO Semi-Formal at night. It was so much fun and I'm really glad that I rushed APO this semester. My friends and I were totally rocking the dance floor.

We requested the song Gasolina by Daddy Yankee at one point. It's a few years old, but we figured we'd ask if the DJ had it. He did and played it for us. After the song was over, the DJ came up to us and thanked us for requesting it! He said he would never have played it, but that it was a fun song and he loved our dancing!

I love dancing!

This morning I woke up and went running. I'm starting the Runner's World Holiday Run Streak. Every day, I have to go out and run, even if it's only a mile. I'm on day 2- so not very far haha. Yesterday I did 3 miles and today I did 3.5. I actually meant to do 3 like yesterday, but one of the roads I run on was closed so I had to find a way around!

Although it's been cold, the trees are also beautiful outside! And I love hearing the sound of leaves crunching under my feet when I run.

After that I went to Panera for studying and lunch. I got a wonderful turkey and cheese panini with creamy tomato soup and an apple. Definitely a good choice! I was super hungry after not eating breakfast and running. I also got hazelnut coffee, hoping it would keep me awake.

The coffee didn't keep me awake, I actually felt like I was going to fall asleep the whole time. I'm weird like that. But I got through all of the chapters in my political science book! Yay! I was there for two hours!

When I was driving back to campus, I was happy to see that the lizard on the zoo building has it's Santa hat on! Normally he has a TCU flag in his hand (hand? is that what you call it for lizards?). I think you might be able to see it closer in this picture. I'm trying my hand at editing my pictures.

It's a little blurry, but a lot closer!

Anyways, I'm off to study more now. Hope y'all have a great Friday!

Put a smile on your face

These are two pictures of my dog, Daisy. She is the cutest thing in the world! This is when we first got her, about 2 years ago. She was super skinny and could fit into that little dress. She no longer can because she is a little fat and happy! But that's ok!

Hope these pictures cheer you up! They sure put a smile on my face.

Baby it's cold outside... still

I can't get used to this cold! Seriously, it just is terrible! I bundle up to go outside and I'm still cold. I go back inside and turn up the heat and I'm still cold! I put on more clothes, and well... you get it.

Weather for Fort Worth, TX

But it's weird because the other day I went outside in shorts and a sweatshirt on my way to the Rec. It's like a two minute walk, maybe less. But I wasn't cold at all. Normally I'm freezing just thinking about going outside!

My theory is that I feel invincible in work out clothes. It doesn't even matter if it's my fancy running clothes or just Nike shorts and a t-shirt. I always feel ready to go and that warms me up when I'm outside.

When I ran my half marathon, I wore shorts and a t-shirt, even to the starting line. Everyone was wearing a bunch of clothes and standing by heaters, but I wasn't cold. Keep in mind that was in AZ in December, when it gets down to like 40 in the morning usually. Here it was in the 20's and 30's this morning.

Even though I feel that way about work out clothes, which is totally random, I know- I still can't get myself to go running outside. I'm a wimp and as much as I hate the treadmill, I'd rather go on that than go outside and get frostbite, hypothermia, or a cold.

I can be dramatic about the cold, in case you can't tell.

Apply for Jobs!

My time in the Hallmark Cooperation is apparently not done. Every time I think to apply for a job somewhere, I immediately think of Hallmark. Today, I applied at two Hallmarks!

I swore that I would get out of Hallmark as soon as possible because I don't want to spend my whole life with them. But it's a great company and really nice people work at all of the stores! I can't think of any place better to work, especially during college.

Hopefully I get the jobs! Wish me luck!

Bye Bye Mail

CNN posted this story today about the Postal Service. Slower delivery and job cuts? No bueno.

But on a positive note, the Country Christmas Music station on Pandora is awesome! Everyone should listen to it.

Last week of classes too! I made it through today, so only 4 more classes between tomorrow and Wednesday. Then it's dead days, which are our days to study before finals. And finals next week. Then I'll finally be home! Yay!

Lots of stuff going on this week, but I'll keep you updated!

I like this quote! It reminds me of Elle Woods and Legally Blonde. In that movie she says that the professional trainer couldn't have killed her husband because "Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't kill their husbands."

But seriously, I know it's cold out and our bodies want to hibernate, so we don't want to work out. But it'll make you feel so much better and healthier! Go to work out classes or just walk somewhere!

Dumb BCS

One thing I've learned at college is that the BCS sucks! They are not very fair to teams not in their conference. I know that it's supposed to be a computer that generates numbers, but it seems biased somehow!

TCU should have been ranked 16 today after our win yesterday. But no. We are still ranked 18. So not high enough for BCS bowl game.

Instead, TCU will be headed to the Poinsettia Bowl. Tickets are only $45, which is a good price. The game is on December 21st, so anyone who is in that area should go!

Also, you can buy tickets for $25 that will go to local military members, so they can go watch the game for free.

Weekend update

Sorry that I didn't post yesterday, I was very busy! This is my second to last weekend here this semester!

On Friday, I had APO Crossover, which is the first step in becoming an active. I had to answer questions about APO to show what I've learned this semester. I passed, thank goodness!

After that, I went on a horse-drawn carriage ride! It was so cute- I felt like I was in Central Park. Then my friends and I went to dinner, watched Elf, and just had a fun night hanging out.

Yesterday, I went to Body Pump in the morning. It was so hard! I was sweating 5 minutes in and all of my muscles were shaking. But I actually wasn't as sore after as I was last time.

Then we had our last football game! It was rainy and gloomy out, but my friend and I bought ponchos and stayed the whole time. It was a great game! We won against UNLV 56-9. It was senior night too, so it was nice to see all the seniors and their families on the field. And after the game, we all went out on the field. I was s close to all of the players, like Tank Carder and Casey Pachall!

Then, I went to dinner with some other friends and went to a Christmas concert. A middle/elementary school from the area was performing. The kids were so talented and cute! And the TCU Word of Truth Gospel Choir sang Calling in Action and Soul Steppers, both TCU dance groups, danced also. I felt like I was in the Christmas spirit afterwards!

This morning, it was still rainy. But it's really cold too! Under 40 degrees outside. But I braved the weather and got my grocery shopping done. Now I'm off to the Rec, then have meetings tonight.

I'll post another update later, hopefully! Have a good Sunday!

Youtube

Youtube gets a makeover! If you go to youtube today, you will see that it looks a lot different!

I'm personally confused by the changes, but it looks a lot more personal. Like it recommends stations and songs that it thinks I would like. And it has information and links on the side for me too.

But I liked when I could go to youtube and it would immediately show me what was most popular. You can still see that if you click on the trending, popular, music, or entertainment tabs, but it's not right there on the front screen.

I'm biased though. As a person who isn't completely up to date with all technology and is trying to learn about everything, when something changes, I get lost. But these changes are actually great and I'm sure I'll start to appreciate them fully soon!

Please read the article from CNN that I have a link to at the top of this post. It's really informative! Apparently these changes have been available for a while, but it's just now happening for everyone. So check it out! And let me, or Youtube know what you think. They have an option to provide feedback at the bottom of your Youtube homepage.

How to Help this Holiday Season!

If you want a really simple way to make a difference this holiday season, write a letter to Santa. I'm so serious right now!

If you write a letter to Santa and put the stamped letter in the mail box at Macy's, they will donate $1 for every letter, up to $1 million!

Get all your friends and family to join in too. The letters really add up. Macy's is only at 300,000 something letters right now, but I hope they make it to a million before Christmas.

Plus, we all used to write letters to Santa when we were little. Now you can continue the tradition while doing something good at the same time.

Just tell him what you want or write a nice thank you!

Cartoons!
