How to choose, how to choose...

Tonight is the TCU Football game at Cowboys Stadium against BYU!

But it's also the 7th game of the World Series, with the Rangers and the Cardinals tied 3-3.

Everybody in Texas, well mainly at TCU, is having a hard time deciding which game to go to/watch. I know so many students who are telling their TCU tickets so they can stay home and watch the World Series!

I understand why, but it's just sad that everyone is giving up on TCU so easily. I hope the TCU side of the stadium isn't empty.

Oh, and update about Tim Halperin's music video on the Today show- it wasn't shown today. It'll be shown on Monday, hopefully!

What happened to this semester?!

So lately I haven't been writing as much about my life because I've been focusing a lot on quotes, news, and other fun updates... didn't you just love the cartoon earlier?

Since I've been neglecting my duties a little, I figured I would give a life update tonight! Now that there is much to say haha.

This semester is going by so fast for me! I can't believe there is only a month until Thanksgiving and about 6 weeks until winter break!

Classes are great, but so much harder this semester. I'm also looking for jobs and internships. Everything just seems to pile up, doesn't it?

I've been working out a lot more lately though! I want to get back in running shape and lose some of the weight that I gained senior and freshmen year. So I've been running and cross training with water aerobics and zumba.

I think it's working because I feel a lot more energetic now, but that may also be from eating healthier. Isn't it weird that when you work out you want to eat better but want to eat junk food when you're lazy? Anyways, that's how it is for me.

And I can run for an hour straight now! Not very fast, but it's still an improvement.

And as for the rest of my life? I'm loving the co-ed fraternity I joined! I've met so many great people and I love being able to volunteer at more places. I also feel like I always have something to do. Week days are packed with school and weekends are spent with friends!

Isn't that how college should be? Because I love it!

Cutest thing ever!

P.S. I never make my bed on rainy days

Listen to this song, it's so  pretty and optimistic. I'm using it as my quote today... I know I'm a cheater, don't hate me haha.

It's called Everything's Right, by Matt Wertz.

Also, as for the P.S. in the post title, that is actually a true statement. I just noticed today, but it seems like every time we have a rainy day, I don't make my bed. I guess it's just that I want to stay in my bed all day instead of going outside.

Oh well, it works for me!

Campaign Season!

http://www.tcu360.com/campus/2011/10/13811.video-sga-student-body-candidates-sound-debate

I am on the Elections and Regulations Committee for the Student Government at my school. Right now it's campaign season and we had our first televised debate yesterday!

Y'all should check it out. It's really amazing what a few college kids can do to make our debate seem as realistic as a real debate!

Exciting news!

And not so exciting news too... sorry.

World Series
The game has been postponed because of weather! This is why all of the games should have been in Texas.

Ok, maybe I'm a little biased.

But still! It's been beautiful in Texas today! Perfect baseball weather.

Now for my good news! TCU will be on the Today show on Friday :)

TCU alum Tim Halperin's song "We Fight Back" and the video for the song will be discussed on the show. The video includes a lot of TCU students and other important people from Texas. It is for Frogs for the Cure, TCU's version of Komen for the Cure.

Anyways, check him out on Friday! It's wonderful that this will be on national television. This will bring a lot of attention to Tim and TCU. Go Tim!

TOMS

I love the TOM collection. Mainly because their shoes are so comfortable and I wear them everywhere! And because I feel good about buying them since they donate a pair of shoes to kids in need.

So needless to say, I have a lot of TOMS.

Those aren't all. Just a few  examples haha.

But yesterday, I got a box from TOMS in the mail. I didn't order any, so I was confused. But it ended up being a TOMS sweatshirt that my boyfriend got me for my birthday.

This is the softest sweatshirt ever! And one of my little quirks is feeling the inside of every sweatshirt, sweater, and jacket to see how soft it is. I never noticed how much I did that until I went shopping with my boyfriend and my friends. My family has never pointed that quirk out to me.

But this will keep me very warm in this crazy Texas weather. Unfortunately, it is so soft, that I might not want to  get out of bed and leave my room if I have it on. We'll see how it goes!

You smile, I smile

I was listening to Pandora when this really pretty song came on. And the lyrics said "When you smile, I smile."

I thought that was so cute! And then I saw that it was a Justin Bieber song, but this guy, Tyler Ward, was doing a cover of it.

Anyways, he has a great voice and y'all should listen to it!

Sorry I couldn't get the video to show up in here, youtube wasn't working with me today.

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

My news for today is that the book about Steve Jobs came out! Seriously, this man has got to be one of the most interesting people in the world.

First of all, many of my peers are impressed by the fact that he never finished college and traveled the world instead. I'm sure at this point in time, that is what every college student would like to do. Especially if we can all become as influential and rich as Steve Jobs.

Secondly, how did he come up with all of those inventions?! iPods, iPads, etc... it's crazy! I wish I had thought of something like that. I wonder if he ever knew how much his inventions would truly change the world.

Anyways, I would love to read the book about him. I'm sure there is so much more to him than the few things i have heard. Y'all should check it out too!

Soccer

Tonight was my first intramural soccer game of the season! Last year, our intramural team was really bad... as in we barely found enough people to play each game. And we lost every game.

So needless to say, I didn't have high hopes for this season.

But it was great! We have a huge co-ed team and we had at least 5 subs all game! Plus, we scored a lot of goals. They ended the game early because we were up by so much.

I feel bad for the other team... but at least we all had fun!

Rangers

In case you didn't see, the Rangers lost last night... badly.

16 to 7. Ouch.

Well tonight is Game 4 of the World Series! The score is 2-1, but the Rangers could tie it up tonight!

FROGS WIN!

69-0!

The Horned Frogs beat the Lobos.

Finally, a high scoring game for the frogs. Seriously, everyone has been waiting. Compared to last year, this year has been really terrible. Especially since we have lost our two most important games so far.

But at least we won by a lot for Homecoming! Even though it is planned so that we will win, I'm still happily surprised that it was by that much.

Plus, TCU broke a school record today. 69 is the most points scored in a game, beating the old record of 68 from the 1930's. Awesome!

Skype

So I was not a huge fan of skype at first, but now I love it!

Last night, I skyped with my boyfriend for almost two hours and this morning I skyped too. My mom wanted to skype so I could say hi to my dogs. They are so cute! I miss them when I'm at school. And my grandma was there too!

Anyways, skype seemed like such a hassle to me at first, but now it is awesome! It's such a great way to stay in touch with people. And I love that I can see the people that I'm talking to.

Anyways, I'll post pictures from my birthday later! It ended up being great, as much as I didn't want to celebrate initially.

Birthdays

After being excited earlier today, I decided that I kind of hate my birthday.

I love celebrating other people's birthdays, but I don't like my own.

I think it's that I like celebrating with my family better, because I used to love my birthday at home.

I don't know, but now my birthday just makes me sad.

19

Tomorrow I will be 19! My last year of being a teenager, which is so weird.

I always feel so young compared to every at college, but now I'm starting to feel a little bit older.

Is 19 old? Haha, I feel like I'm getting there.

News!

WORLD SERIES!!!

Although I'm sad that my team (Red Sox) aren't in the World Series, I am excited that the Rangers are. I'm not a Rangers fan, but I live in Texas and it's awesome to have some games here!

We already had the World Series last year and the Super Bowl earlier this year. Now another World Series! Woohoo!!

Texas just has so much going on and this really adds to making the Metroplex a more popular place in the US.

Quote of the day

When all is said and done, the weather and love are the two elements about which one can never be sure.

-Alice Hoffman

It's so cold out today! The weather in Texas goes from 90's one day to 60's the next. Love is pretty unpredictable too haha.

Winning!

Oh my gosh. I won something!!

Do you ever enter in contests and just assume you won't win? I do! I seem to enter in a bunch of stuff and never win. But today I did!

Yay!

Go there and click on my name, Mariah Pulver, for your news for today :)

Today was my second anchor segment in my broadcast class, so don't be too hard on me! But there are some very interesting things going on, so check it out.

Quote for today:

"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming..." -Dory, Finding Nemo

That's how I felt today! I had so much going on that I just kept chugging right along. Now I'm tired and just want to watch some tv and sleep. But unfortunately I have a very important test in the morning.

Off to more studying, sleep, then even more studying! Wish me luck! And I hope y'all have a good night :)

Weekend Recap

Ok, so my weekend was jam packed! Again. I think my weekends are always filled.

But on Friday, I volunteered at the Humane Society and walked dogs for 2 hours. And let me tell you, that's a work out!

I didn't think I would be so tired after, but I ran around the block with most of those dogs. Since it was two hours of walking, that was a lot of times around the block with a lot of dogs.

After, APO (the co-ed service fraternity I am in) had a Girls vs. Guys night. So the girls went to one house and we watched Disney movies, painted nails, baked cookies, and just talked. The boys went to do manly stuff haha.

Saturday, I went to Six Flags with some people from APO. It was awesome! I had so much fun!

When we got there in the morning, we got through most of the lines pretty quickly, so that was nice. But as the day went on, the lines got longer and longer.

After lunch, we decided to go on this indoor roller coaster and it took us about 2 hours to get through the line and on the ride! When we said we wanted some time to let our food settle, we didn't quite mean that much.

Best ride of the day: Riding in the front row on Titan. We rode Titan earlier in the day, but before we left, we decided to ride it one more time, with everyone waiting to get a seat in the front row. It was night, Dallas was lit up, and the Rangers Stadium next door was lit up. It was amazing!

That was the best experience, but I really loved Texas Giant and Mr.Freeze too. It's so hard to choose an absolute favorite!

Anyways, that was my weekend. How was y'alls weekends?

Quote of the Day

Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.  ~Confucius

My goal for some days is to focus on the simple things in life. Honestly, we all make things more complicated than they need to be!

For example, think about every time you procrastinate on doing something. If you had just done it earlier, there wouldn't be a big problem and you wouldn't be stressed. I know it's hard to not procrastinate, but try it one time! You might find getting things done early is so much more relaxing.

Also, don't over analyze everything. People say things without intending them to have a deep meaning. So don't always assume that when someone says something to you that they are trying to imply something much more.

News of the Day!

I'm thinking of maybe doing a news of the day post too! Since I'm a journalism major, I feel it's only right that I include some news in this.

But it won't be all boring stuff! I'm going to try to pick interesting things that everyone may not have seen.

So let me know what you think :)

http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/17/tech/social-media/opower-facebook-energy-app/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

This is all about Facebook and energy conservation. At first, I thought those two things didn't really go together. I mean, to use Facebook, you need to use energy from a computer or phone.

But read the article to see what you think!

Quote of the Day

But I learned that there's a certain character that can be built from embarrassing yourself endlessly. If you can sit happy with embarrassment, there's not much else that can really get to ya.
Christian Bale

Had the most embarrassing night. But it's ok. As said in the quote of the day, if I can handle this, I can handle anything.

Running

This morning, my plan was to wake up and go running. But when I got out of bed, my legs were so sore! After running yesterday morning and then standing in line/walking around at Six Flags yesterday, I thought my legs needed a rest.

Now, I'm thinking differently. Isn't a slow, short run just what my legs need to loosen up? I think it might be! And if not, oh well.

What do y'all do to work out when you're sore?

SIX FLAGS!!

I went to Six Flags Over Texas for the first time today!

It was AWESOME!

I'll have to explain it more in detail later because I am way too tired right now to write a long post.

But basically it was the best way possible to spend my Saturday. I am a roller coaster junkie! I absolutely love them and can't get enough. I'm considering getting a season pass to Six Flags... Maybe! haha. More about that later!

Busy Morning

My goodness. I have been running around like crazy all morning!

Starting at 9 am, I had a meeting with one of my profs. I don't know why she scheduled it that early, especially because we were done within 30 minutes! But I guess at least I got that out of the way.

Right after, I had to help someone from my class tape her news package. Very fun! She was doing a story about the new dance building here at TCU.

Let me just tell you, I am amazed by what dancers can do! I was fascinated and mesmerized while watching them. That might sound creepy, but I can't imagine all of the hard work it takes!

Also, I got my first birthday present in the mail today! Woo hoo! I will be 19 soon!

Now, I'm off to take my roommate to the train station. Boy, this day never ends.

Quote of the Day

"If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it's yours forever. If it doesn't, then it was never meant to be."

I've heard this quote a few times before, but never really understood it. Why would you let go of something that you love? But this past week, I've realized exactly why you would let go of something that you love.

I've also realized how amazing it is when that something comes back.

She's so cute!

I saw this on one of the blogs that I follow and y'all should watch it! I thought it would just be some little girl trying badly to rap, but she is actually a great singer!

Lonely Night

First day back at school and let's just say that I'm not super excited about it. It'll take me a couple days.

I seriously do love college, but relaxing at home was so nice! And my bed felt lonely last night without two puppies curled up next to me.

Also, waking up this morning and going to breakfast was not relaxing. At home, I can make my own pot of coffee and make whatever I want for breakfast. This morning it was loud in the cafeteria and I just ate cereal. And no coffee because the coffee is terrible.

Plus, I need to get back in my routine. It was nice to do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted, even if that was just sitting down to watch TV or walking the dogs.

I'll get used to it again soon. Hopefully...

Back to School

My fall break was amazing... and that was completely unexpected!

First of all: Sometimes people surprise you, in a good way. That definitely happened to me.

Second: Friends are friends no matter what. Even though I don't talk to these people a lot when I'm away at school, I can still spend time with them and it's as if things never changed.

Third: Fall break is so ironic. This is because when I go home, everyone asks me how I like college. And I say it is the best thing in the world and I love it. Which is true! But when it comes time for break to end and for me to go back to school, I'm sad and wish break was longer. Go figure.

Anyways, I'm so glad I went home this weekend. Even if I didn't get to spend a lot of time with my family, I spent time with my amazing friends, dogs, and boyfriend. I love my life.

Dogs

I think dogs are the best!

They are always so excited when you come home, even if you were only gone for 20 minutes. My dogs even miss me when I go upstairs to change!

They make you feel so loved (haha).

Anyone else have cute dogs?

Wonderful Vacation

I am happily surprised by my trip so far. It has been great!

I've been spending a lot of time with my friends, my dogs, and myself (haha).

I think this is exactly what I needed. I need some alone time to just relax, some time with my adorable dogs, and some time with my amazing friends.

I think that sometimes you take everything that you have for granted and you don't realize until it's gone. Being away at college has made me miss my friends and home so much! So although my family is not here, I'm enjoying my time here anyways.

Saturday, October 8, 2011

Hello Tucson!

I'm apparently bad at blogging while traveling too!

This weekend is fall break! So I do not have school on Monday or Tuesday. But being the wonderful student that I am, I also skipped school on Thursday and Friday for break.

On Thursday, I woke up at 6 to drive to the airport, waiting to get on a flight. I fly standby because it is a lot cheaper, but that also means I'm never guaranteed a flight. I waited at the airport from 7:15 until I finally got on a flight at 3 something!

Surprisingly, that isn't the longest I've waited before. You don't even want to know.

But I got the last seat on a flight and made it home. It was nice to spend two days with my family! But they left today, so now I am home alone watching the dogs.

Funny how that happens.

But it'll be fun! I'm planning on having some friends stay with me and it'll hopefully be the nice, and possibly relaxing, weekend that I need.

Henrietta Lacks

Tonight, I went to a lecture about Henrietta Lacks. Dr. Ruth Faden, from Johns Hopkins came to speak, and so did Sonny Lacks, Bobbette Lacks, and Erika Johnson.

If you have never read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, I definitely recommend that you do. It is a great book and brings up so many ethical questions regarding medicine.

Basically, Henrietta Lacks is the person behind the name HeLa cells. The doctors at Johns Hopkins took them from her cervix and they are the first cells to live forever outside the human body. Many vaccinations and cures for diseases have been made with these cells.

Also, many researchers have made money off of the cells, not to mention the doctors who produce the cells in mass quantities. Henrietta's family knew nothing about the cells until recently. And they obviously never received money or help with their health issues either.

Tonight, Dr. Ruth Faden spoke about some of the ethical questions and whether the situation would have been different if Henrietta was white, rich, or gave consent. And whether the cells should have stayed confidential. And what we do now in these situations.

My favorite part was when Henrietta' family spoke. It was so nice to hear from them and what they think of the whole situation. They were very gracious and thankful; and they only had nice things to say about everything that has happened.

I'm honored that I got to attend this lecture and hear everything the Dr. Faden and Henrietta's family had to say.

And please, read the book! It's a great book and part of the money goes to scholarships for Henrietta's family!

Grey's Anatomy

I absolutely love Grey's Anatomy! Which is funny, because I hate doctors, blood, needles, hospitals, etc. You name it, I am scared to death of it.

But I love this show. I'm addicted to it. So I'm giving a quote of the day from it.

"Too often, the thing you want most is the one thing you can't have. Desire leaves us heartbroken, it wears us out. Desire can wreck your life. But as tough as wanting something can be; The people who suffer the most, are those who don't know what they want."

I believe this is completely true! What I want right now is for everything to go back to normal and for me to move on with life. But at least I know that. Some people don't know what they want and they spend all of their life wandering around, looking for something.

Every day gets easier!

I know this may not be true for everyone, but it's true for me. When something bad happens, every day that you make it through after that makes you stronger. And each day will get easier! Because you become that much stronger, you start to go through each day without thinking about the incident.

And let me tell you, that's a great feeling. Knowing that you can move on is amazing.

Because honestly, who wants to be pessimistic and sad all the time?

I can't get enough of Boyce Avenue right now. And this song is so beautiful. Take a listen.

Quote of the day

"Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same."

Weekend Update

So my weekend was jam-packed once again! Life of a college student, I guess.

On Friday night I went to the APO chapter retreat. Now, in case I haven't mentioned this before, I'm an APO pledge. APO is a co-ed service fraternity and it is awesome! Chapter Retreat was at the Azle Party Ranch, about 40 minutes away from TCU.

We basically played games and just got to know each other better. So much fun and really a great way to meet my fellow APO people!

Saturday was not so good. I helped a girl from my class tape her news package. It was good experience to use the camera and everything, but I was outside for two hours before the football game. So the football game was miserable, not only because we were losing badly, but because I was dehydrated and plain worn out.

Still can't believe TCU lost. But on the plus side, I went to Waffle House for the first time on Saturday night! The place was extremely gross, but the food was great. I tried not to think about how dirty it was when I was eating.

Sunday was relaxing. Got lots of homework done, went to the APO meeting, went out to dinner and dessert with a friend. All around good day.

Now today is another story... At least we all have the weekends to have fun and prepare us for tough weeks!
